Vizsla

Description...

An active sporting breed who was bred to hunt and "point" hidden birds, then retrieve those birds dropped by the hunter(s). The Vizsla is very active breed that requires a lot of human interaction. They are rust-coloured and have a short and soft coat which usually remains clean. They are somewhat light boned for speed, but have enough muscle and size to have stamina also.

History...

Vizsla Dog BreedDeveloped on the Hungarian plains as a bird and other small game hunter, thought to travel with the Magyar people of the region. This breed is considered to be one of the oldest members of the sporting breeds.

The breed is now used mostly for hunting upland birds, which it finds and then freezes into point, if any birds are shot, it retrieves them.

Traits...

Vizsla Head - Dog BreedThis breed loves to hunt and therefore loves hunting tests and trials as well. Obedience classes are great for both dog and owner, and are almost essential for such an active dog. The Vizsla will almost certainly enjoy any other activities done outdoors with its family, talk to a breeder or other experienced Vizsla owner about what activities they participate in.

Good aspects...

Very people oriented, needs to be part of the family and will try to sit in your lap if you allow it. A well socialized and trained Vizsla usually is good around unfamiliar people, pets, and children as long as both are supervised. This is a good choice for a family who has one or more members that are serious upland bird hunters.

Health...

A very healthy breed. Some have allergies and some are sensitive to anaesthesia. Hip dysplasia has been kept to a low level, but all dogs used for breeding should be checked and cleared. Other less common problems do occur, these should be discussed with an experienced Vizsla person.

Be aware...

This breed is active and needs exercise, socialization, and training. If this breed is not given the attention and/or the exercise it needs it can become destructive and/or it could develop other bad habits. Sometimes easily distracted and stubborn during training, a trainer needs to be firm and persistent, yet not harsh, to achieve the desired results. If you do not like a dog by you at all times, you may want to consider another breed, as the Vizsla wants and needs to be by its people as much as possible.

Summary...

This dog loves to hunt and it loves people, which makes it a good choice for a hunting and family dog.
